Tequila Sunrise

As with most classic cocktails, it can be difficult to definitively document and differentiate between fact, fiction and mythology.
Whether you like it stirred or shaken, on the rocks or up, the Tequila Sunrise is an icon of American Culture.
One common and frequently reported story traces the roots of the Tequila Sunrise to the luxurious Arizona Biltmore, where it was created by Gene Sulit in the 1930s or 1940s.
Back then the Tequila Sunrise was a refreshing combination of Tequila, Crème de Cassis, fresh lime juice and a splash of club soda.
Now the more popular concoction is tequila, orange juice and grenadine syrup. the cocktail is named for the way it looks after it has been poured into a glass.

The denser ingredients (grenadine) settle, creating gradations in color that mimic a sunrise. But, using Crème de Cassis the drink holds a different name – Tequila SUNSET!

Other stories credit the creation to the Tequila Sunrise to the Agua Caliente of Tijuana, Mexico in the post-Prohibition era as Californians headed south-of-the-border in search of various forms of entertainment, gambling and relaxation. Regardless of the actual origin, it is difficult to dispute the impact that modern American Culture has had on the Tequila Sunrise, be it the Eagles’ 1973 hit or the 1988 film staring Mel Gibson and Michelle Pfeiffer.

  • 2 measures Tequila
  • Orange juice
  • 2 dashes Grenadine
Mixing instructions: Pour tequila in a highball glass with ice, and top with orange juice. Stir. Add grenadine by tilting glass and pouring grenadine down side by flipping the bottle vertically very quickly. The grenadine should go straight to the bottom and then rise up slowly through the drink. Garnish stirrer, straw and cherry-orange.
